Overview
Sometimes known as the ‘Coca-Cola’ route, because it is the most popular route up the mountain,
the Marangu Route is in fact probably followed by ninety per cent of all climbers. It has a welldefined path, which has been well set out and where most obstacles have been modified to make
them ‘climber friendly’. Accommodation on this route is in purpose built mountain huts
providing adequate shelter and even bottled water, beer and soft drinks (at high altitude prices!).
Despite the human traffic (it can be fun to mingle with climbers from all over the world), this is a
very scenic route with good views of Mawenzi and excellent prospects for viewing wildlife.

Tour Plan
Day 1 : Â Arrival Base Hotel in Moshi
Direct arrival at Mountain Inn. Pre-climb briefing on trek & overnight base hotel [D]
DAY2 : Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut: 3-4hrs.
Start climb at Marangu Gate (1860m) through montane forest. Trekking time: 3-4 hours,
approx. 7km distance. Overnight Mandara Hut (2720m) [B, L, D]

Day 3: Mandara – Horombo hut: 5-6hrs.
Trek through grassy moorland and heather. Trekking time: 5-6 hours, approx. 11km
distance. Overnight Horombo Hut (3720m) [B, L, D]
Day 4 : Horombo – Kibo Hut: 5-6hrs.
Continue ascending passed ‘the last water point’ traversing the saddle between Kibo and
Mawenzi through the alpine desert zone. Trekking time: 5-6 hours, approx. 12km
distance. Overnight Kibo Hut (4700m) [B, L, D]
Day 5 : Kibo – (Summit Gilman’s Point & Uhuru Peak) – Horombo Hut: 12-16hrs
Around mid-night, start for the summit to Gilman’s Point (5681m) and then continue to
Uhuru Peak (5895m). Descend to Horombo Hut. Trekking time: 12-16 hours, approx.
21km distance. Overnight Horombo Hut (3720m) [B, L, D]
Day 6 : Horombo - Marangu Gate: 5-6hrs.
Continue your descent through the heather and moorland, and the forest to Marangu Gate
(1860m). Transfer to Moshi. Trekking time: 5-6 hours, approx. 12km distance. Overnight
Moshi [B, D]
